The most amazing thing has happened :). The book that would never end ended today. And with a powerful scene as far as I could tell. It almost had me in tears as Wardah rediscovers Diggory only to have him reject her story as fantasy. But they manage to work it all out by the end. I promise little in the ways of comfort with my novels, but everything always ends on a positive note :D.

As far as the writing and the outline went, it turned out the last 3-6 scenes were actually parts of the same scene. Since this scene is right at the end and is longer than any of the previous chapters, I'm thinking I'll find a place to break it up during the edit, but we'll see.

Believe it or not, I may actually finish this book before the end of time :). I've entered the climax and so the number of scenes and what's necessary has become even more fluid than it was before. Today, I removed one scene (or rather there were two scenes in my outline that were better as a segue rather than an actual scene break) and brought Wardah back together with her love, though she remains unaware for all of another 2-3 pages :). It's looking plausible for me to be done with this novel's first draft by the end of this week, though difficult. That's the goal because (insane as I am) I would like to start a new novel for the Forward Motion March Madness challenge. If so, I'll probably chronicle that one here too.

Hmm, maybe I should chronicle an edit next. I seem to be accumulating a huge edit pile again :p.

And here I was sure I had nothing left in me for the day. I managed to make a simple task into yet another barrier come to hold poor Wardah back. Still, she works her way past it and will shortly be on her way to the capitol and the defeat of her bitterest enemy, if not in this life then in every other one to follow. Nah, she doesn't hold a grudge ;).

I'm sick, but I couldn't leave it be with so little to go for 100k. Sadly, I stopped in the middle of a scene, something I hate doing, but I'm over and I'm tapped :).

On the writing itself, I just can't leave the outline alone :p. Minor tweaking, a split of one into two scenes and I've passed the 100k mark! The moment of truth approaches and Wardah is darn sure she's going to make it happen even if she has to risk what little she has left to do so.

And back into writing for a sec despite what life is tossing my way. It was a relief to get this moment and have the words come to me, though I experienced a little difficulty because I'd done such a detailed re-outline that some aspects seemed already written. We'll see how many continuity errors I've introduced in taking so long once I get to the editing stage. The other thing I did was add more scenes. Luckily, a few have been short, but still, more scenes start to bump up the word count. You know, I don't really understand this book. It's depressing and things just keep getting worse. Every time Wardah gets a chance, something slaps her back. But the story really calls to me. I can't help but think there's something to like in it for all the depression. Maybe it's her resiliency. Maybe it's just that how life struggles don't knock her down, or if they do, she recoups and rises above it. Anyway, if all goes well, someday you all will be enjoying this tale too, though enjoying doesn't quite seem to be the right word.

And back and forth I go. Added another scene because, despite my cleanup, there were some things that had to happen. The good thing is that these scenes are running short and sweet. This is good both for overall word count and because I hope they get the reader's heart beating just a little faster with the sense that something big is coming up even if there's no overt clues...well, besides the fact that the book is running out of pages ;).

I've added a few more words, but had to stop for a bit. Much of what I've already put in is just now coming into play in the outline. Whether the original choices or the new ones are the better, I don't know, but obviously these events had to happen in some form. Life happened to draw me away from actual writing, a not uncommon complaint, but I took some time right now to tidy up the outline so when I get to write tomorrow, as I hope to, I'll be able to move forward with an outline to follow. What's odd is that, according to the stats, I have only removed one scene. What I did was eliminate 4-5 and add 4 or so completely new ones :).

I had a good run today and made some real progress story wise. She's finally asked to go to the weighing, ducking a not so cool plan her master had for her at least temporarily. Scenes are getting long again and the length is creeping up. Bah :p. But I can feel the end almost within reach :).

Just a quick snatch at progress. Not much to say except that I'm one scene shorter. I took a good look at the next two scenes in my outline and, unlike the ones I did yesterday, these really didn't stand on their own. And nothing happened during the first part to change that assessment so off scene chopping I merrily went :).

Oh, and for stat mongers, I added my word count for the day I post to my little stats at the bottom.

Apparently my progress is going to be in inconsistent leaps and hey, as long as I'm moving forward, I'm happy. Though still about 29k from the end, things have gone full circle with the beginning scene in a way that is nice and tidy (amazingly so for not being planned out that way :)). I added another scene for those of you who are keeping an eye on the count. Basically, the original scene seemed a bit too straightforward and so a hiccup occurred in her plan to talk to the merchant, something already fraught with tension and upset. Sadly, it's not going to work out the way she'd hoped....

Well, I'd hoped to get back into writing on this with some frequency, but it just isn't happening. I still have coding to do on my coding project and am finishing up other things as well. (Not to mention the novel crit I'm embarking on soon ;).) However, at least every other week, I will try to tuck some additional words into my file and before I know it, Wardah's life will be OH so much better :). At least I got the scene off my bathroom mirror ;). I did get about 2026 words done today with the chance of more tomorrow. If I can keep to 2500 a week, I'll finish at some point. I would like to be ready for a new novel by the end of March for March Madness if at all possible :).

And believe it or not, I'm back. I have not abandoned this novel at all, but I normally have a post NaNo slowdown and then I was involved in a huge coding project that has zapped all my energy. The project was a store for selling writing technique ebooks run by Holly Lisle, a much-published writer of fantasy and romance novels. Go ahead and check it out if you haven't already. She's got some good stuff going on there and more to come.

Visit Holly's Shop

However, this project did eat up pretty much all the creativity that NaNo left to me, so I haven't been writing except for a non-fiction article. Imagine my relief the other day when I had a bit of inspiration about how the next hurdle for poor Wardah both came about and how it has repercussions (positive ones if you'll believe me) for the end :).

Still, it took another week to actually get writing again and I'm not even done with that scene. But the setup is done so here's hoping this week will take me past it. I finished my weekend marathon with a grand total of 2610, which might sound low at least for me, but I didn't get to start the marathon until 5:30pm today :p.

Enough moaning. Here's my stats. I added another scene too.

My goodness. This story really wants to be written. Did another 4k today...yes, I was marathoning, but my goal was 3k. Then I ended up in the middle of a scene that demanded to be written. Interestingly enough, I think I've come up with a new way to get to where I was going so the last final humiliation doesn't have to happen. I may still use that scene, but it'll have a different flavor than the one I'd had planned. Thank goodness for Leenan :).

A long break from Bring Out Your Dead to do NaNo gave me the strength to blast through the worst of the feral part and Wardah is now on the road to recovery...sort of. She's relearning how to speak, how to do her chores, how to trust, all in the same environment that pushed her over the edge before. We'll see how well she does, but she's about to get her first taste of the possibility of revenge :).

And once again, just slipping in a wee little bit, only 1108 words. I'm not quite done with the scene, and I don't know if it works, but progress is progress.

She's no longer a reliable narrator and she's the only POV, which makes things a little dicey. I'm skimming a lot of time since she's not really experiencing it either, but only crits will tell if the technique worked.

Well, I took a bit of time off to do NaNo. I'll pop in for a little work here or there, but Bring Out Your Dead was proving too traumatic. That said, the break to NaNo did me good. I just wrote the first transition stage to feral and the scene is tight :). That and she's discovered her hatred, that which will drive her through the rest of this section and to the end of the novel. Hatred is good. Trying to understand why the gods think it's right for her to lose everything and become a victim of her master was not :(. But the most marvelous thing is that, thanks to a bit of happily placed manure ;), and her master's reaction to her new state, she's not going to get raped :D. It was a tight thing there a time or two, but despite what she believes, at least one of the gods must be watching out for her.

1 scene becomes 3, up goes the word count and the end stretches farther and farther away.

However, this 3/1 scene is a pivotal one and hard to write. I still have the last piece, but this is the one which makes her feral. Her master forces himself on her once, is interrupted, arranges things so he won't be, and is interrupted again, this time too far along to convince his wife he was innocent. Sounds all like he'll get in trouble and she's home safe, right? Now why would she go feral, you ask?

Well, that's the third scene I haven't written yet, but this should give a hint for those with a twisted mind.

From the master's wife:

"You're just lucky I didn't catch you with a tavern girl or our revenues would suffer. And it wouldn't be me that felt the bite."

Ah this just makes me want to leap into the next scene :p.

One more thing before stats. For those of you who have been steadily following my not so steady process, I will be putting Bring Out Your Dead aside for a month. Yep, that's right. I've been sucked into the National Novel Writing Month. Though I may end up doing some work on Dead, my focus will be on a new novel that is much lighter than this one. Could that have been a factor? Maybe. I still believe in this novel and absolutely intend to finish it. However, come Nov 1, my progress will be even more sporadic than it has been.

And progress continues. As much as I would love to be an every day writer, the only time I succeed in that is when my only writing project is...well...writing. As long as I am writing, editing, critiquing, researching markets, sending queries/stories, etc. I should just resign myself to this sporadic progress. This week shows a nice jump due to a 48-hour word count marathon. It would have been higher, but I was also working on outlines for two other novels to have on hand when I finish this novel.

As far as Bring Out Your Dead goes, things for poor Wardah have only gotten worse. She doesn't know why, but she has a pretty good idea. She's wrong, but I'm not sure whether that will ever become clear in the story, one of the limits of the single POV. That said, so far, the single POV is holding up for me. Things are happening to her enough to keep people going, I hope, though hope is the one thing I have stolen from her. As of now, everything she had to hope for is gone and she will spiral into despair and then a feral state. Now that'll be an interesting challenge. I've written a blind character, I've written characters who cannot speak the local language, but feral? We'll have to see how that goes :).

For those of you watching the word count, the total has gone up and then down again, and I added a few scenes, though not many.

Made some good progress with the rest of the 48 hr marathon for a total of 10k and change. Then, managed to have a chaotic week and just barely managed 6501 from Sunday-Saturday. It's below my goal of 7k per week, but I'm making good progress. Wardah's getting two very different impressions of Talib's desires between the slave minder and Talib's sister.
