I now understand just why he's willing to go to all lengths to stop their marriage and it doesn't make me like him one bit more. Turns out he courted her mother and was spurned, which may be the oldest story in the book, but he took it a step further. He set about to undermine their merchant business so when the mother's husband died, he left her nothing but debts. Debts which he offered to pay in exchange for her as his concubine. The reputation she has that he uses against her daughter? One he created in fact as well as rumor. He's a very sick man who can't handle the possibility that his son will succeed where he had failed.
